The Laurissilva is the typical subtropical forest of the biogeography region of the Macronesia (including the Azorean, Canaria and Madeira archipelagos). It has great scientific interest, for its antiquity, its composition - similar to the one of the flora of the Tertiary one that it occupied the south of the Europe and the North of Africa with million years before the glacier periods - and for the numerous existing endemic species. The forest of brivifolia Juniperus and perado Ilex ssp. azoria is a typical forest of the Azores. Scaling the mountain of Pico, the highest of Portugal with 2351 meters, is an unbelievable adventure. The mountain is a recent volcano, with active smoke in its higher level, which belongs to a natural reservation created in 12 of May of 1982, with about 1500 hectares. When reaching the top of the mountain, observes a unique vision of all the islands of the central group of the Azorean archipelago. During the Winter Pico Island offers a wonderful beauty that captures the tourist attention. Due to its altitude it is the only place in the Azores that can attend a wonderful scenario of snow, during the cold months the top of the mountain is covered with snow. The patrimony built in Pico is the result of the geographic characteristics, type of occupation and activity that men have exercised along the years. The old properties, such as solar, wine cellars, warehouses, wells of tide, ports and chapels, reflects the daily experiences dedicated by the natives, essentially in the agriculture and fishing. Have a close contact with the nature and relax by covering the numerous old and traditional tracks in the interior of the island or by the coast side tracks. These tracks have a great cultural and historical environmental interest. The group of islands Pico, Faial and S. Jorge are well known as the islands of the triangle. They are very close to each other and because of that they have connection by boat, on a regular manner there are several daily round trips. You can depart from Pico and visit the other two wonderful islands Faial and S. Jorge.
